About Mitz

MitzMitz was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1970.  As a little child, he learned to play the piano through his mother, who was a classical piano teacher.  However, like many children do, he stopped playing the piano when he was about 9.  He picked up the classical guitar for the first time when he was 13.  He took a classical guitar class in Junior High; and started playing the guitar for fun.  He picked up his first electric guitar when he was 14.

He is one of the premier guitarists and educators on the East Coast.   He is published
in Groves Dictionary as well as Downbeat, Guitar Player, and IAJE Educator magazines.
He is active as an adjudicator and a clinician.  He is also a former President of
Combs College of Music in Philadelphia, PA.  He is currently a DBK Jazz recording artist.

Mitz began composing when he was 15 years old.  He grew up listening to the '80s pop music, and even today he claims to be influenced mostly by the 80's/AOR (Album Oriented Rock) music in terms of his music style.  He credits David Foster, Richard Marx, and Toto as having to be his biggest influences in terms of composition and arrangement.  As for his guitar playing, he idolizes guitarists such as Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, Michael Landau, and Jay Graydon.  And of course, Dr. Frank DiBussolo was one of his biggest influences.

He has been playing in numerous bands throughout his musical career thus far.  One of his highlights as a young guitarist included palying live in front of nearly 5000 enthusiastic audience at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA in December of 1993 as the lead guitarist of Brave New Squirrels, a show which was also broadcasted live on a Boston-area radio station.

Mitz in StudioThese days, Mitz has been spending more time in the studio recording his album of songs he has written.  He has started his "recording career" in 1991, and has been spending time recording on and off ever since.  In January 1997, he got involved in a recording project organized by a Swedish guitarist by the name of Tommy Denander, who is one of the most respected guitarist of his generation to come out of Sweden and has recorded internationally.  The project also involved legendary American guitarist Bruce Gaitsch.  Mitz contributed an instrumental piece that he penned and he played with his long-time partner-in-crime, Rob Klamka on the piano, called "Better Off Without You".

Mitz performed on four songs on Rob's debut album with his brother Jeff, Since I Met You, in 1997.
Mitz continues to work with Rob on numerous projects.

Mitz considers himself as a composer first, then arranger and the guitarist.  He is currently working on recording a full album consisting of his songs, with his performing most of the instruments.  The album has been long-overdue, mainly because he is often keeping himself busy with his personal life outside of music.  He is hoping that he will be able to conclude finishing this album so that he can get as many people to hear and enjoy his music.  Stay tuned!
